The One Thing I Regretted Forgetting in My Hospital Bag
Share
At 2:30 in the morning, I woke up with a strange feeling.
I wasn't completely sure if labor had started, but something felt different. I woke my husband, and within minutes we were loading the car.
Thankfully, my hospital bag had been sitting by the front door for almost two weeks. I remember feeling proud of myself. I had packed everything. Or at least I thought I had.
The drive to the hospital felt like it lasted forever. Between contractions and excitement, I barely thought about what was inside my bag.
Once we arrived, everything happened so quickly. Hours later, when I finally had a quiet moment to myself, I reached into my bag looking for something comforting. It wasn't there. Then I realized another item was missing. And another. None of them were expensive. None of them were difficult to pack. But in that moment, they suddenly felt important.
- A long phone charger.
- Lip balm.
- Comfortable pajamas.
- A notebook to write down questions.
- Snacks for after delivery.
I had spent weeks worrying about baby clothes, diapers, and tiny hats. I had forgotten about myself. Looking back, I don't remember what brand of baby blanket I packed. I don't remember how many newborn outfits I brought. But I do remember wishing I had packed the small things that would have made those first hours more comfortable. That's when I realized something many first-time moms discover.
Packing a hospital bag isn't just about preparing for your baby. It's also about taking care of yourself.
Over the next few weeks, I started writing down everything I wished I had packed. Then I spoke with friends who had recently given birth. Each of them had their own "I wish I'd packed..." story.
One forgot slippers.
Another forgot nursing bras.
Someone else wished they had packed more comfortable clothes for going home. Everyone's list was a little different. But one thing was the same. No one wanted to rely on memory while they were in labor. That's why a simple checklist can make such a difference.
Instead of wondering whether you've forgotten something important, you can pack little by little over the final weeks of pregnancy, checking off each item as you go.
It turns preparation into something calm instead of stressful.
